Multilingual websites

A high-quality multilingual website has technical characteristics that are not directly visible in the end result but are essential for good indexing by search engines like Google in all languages.
If a website cannot be indexed in a certain language, the person searching in that language will not find the website in the search results.

Requirements for good indexing:

  • Create separate pages per language (avoid texts in multiple languages on one page).
  • The language must be declared in the HTML code. In an EN page the code should state that this page is in English, in a FR page it states that the language of the page is French, and so on. In this way, the pages will be indexed in both languages.
  • Search engine optimisation (SEO): optimise the website individually for all languages.

All of the multilingual websites that we create meet the above requirements.

SEO: some tips

You can improve the visibility of your website in search engines by following these easy ‘do-it-yourself’ SEO tips.

  • Provide clear content (texts), and use keywords that relate to your ‘business’. Also use synonyms, for example: you rent gîtes in France,so in your text use not only the word ‘gîte’, but also the words: ‘holiday home’, ‘rental’, ‘cottage’, ‘accommodation’, etc.
  • Get ‘backlinks’:, these are links from other websites to your website. Look for online business directories where your website can be included, ask your friends/family members with websites to link to yours, etc. You can also start a blog with interesting content, as other websites might like to link to this content…
  • Keep your website up to date. Google likes ‘fresh’ content, so it helps if you regularly update the content of your website. If this is not a practical solution for you (e.g. because your texts are static), alternatively you can start a blog where you regularly post an article containing your ‘news’.

Google index, mobile-first

Some years ago a mobile-friendly, responsive website has become a ‘must’. Not only to avoid visitors abandon (over 60% of all websites are accessed on mobile devices), but also for Google indexing.
Google boosts the rankings of mobile-friendly pages, they give preferential search rankings to sites optimised for mobile.
In 2018 Google started indexing ‘mobile-first‘, this means that the search-engine looks at mobile content, rather than desktop, when deciding how to rank results.

All our websites are mobile-friendly, responsive websites that automatically adapt to a user’s screen size, the website will look beautiful on desktops, laptops, tablets & smart phones.

Website writing tips

Short and clear texts will make your visitors stay.
Website visitors are nearly always in a hurry, you only have a few seconds to get and keep their attention. Visitors don’t read text on pages in detail, they “scan” the pages looking for information that they are interested in.

  • Use short and clear sentences.
  • Write in a concrete manner.
  • Make the text easy “scannable”, using for example bold important words, using numbered or unordered lists and putting the conclusion in a short and bold sentence at the beginning of the paragraph.

Loading times…

Waiting time? Max. 4 seconds…
Website visitors are not very patient, a web page has to be visible within a few seconds. Your visitors will leave your site if they have to wait too long.
40% of the visitors will abandon a site if they have to wait more than 4 seconds.
On the Internet you can find many tools that will indicate the load times of your web pages, for example: Pingdom or GTmetrix

Pingdom is an easy and free tool, just enter your URL (site address) and click the button ‘Start Test’. Wait for the results that will be displayed, you will see the number of seconds waiting time before the page is entirely loaded. Below this you will find the test results in detail, you can find the exact time of each individual component of your page.

Is your site a bit slow? Try to find the reason and to optimise your site!

Navigation menu

The position of the main navigation bar is very important for the visitors of your website.
Some effective webdesign rules for navigation:

  • The navigation has to be clearly visible and accessible.
  • The navigation has to be consistent, the menu has to appear on all pages.
  • The titles (navigation names) have to be short, clear and understandable.
  • It is advisable to add an extra menu at a different location for general and additional information such as copyrights, your privacy policy, terms and conditions etc. Usually this menu can be found at the bottom of the website.
